Acupuncture is a 3000 year-old traditional Chinese natural medical technique. In 1997, the U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) documented acupuncture’s efficacy and safety for treating a wide range of conditions.
Acupuncture stimulates specific points in your body known as acupoints to improve the body’s functions.
Traditional Chinese medicine is based upon a concept that describes the universe and the body in terms of two opposing forces: yin and yang. When these forces are balanced, the body is healthy. Energy, called qi (pronounced "chee") flows along pathways in the body called meridians. This flow of energy keeps the yin and yang forces in balance. If the flow of energy is blocked, the blockage can lead to pain, lack of function, or poor health. Acupuncture can release the blocked qi to stimulate the body’s natural healing power.
Acupuncture is used to treat a wide range of conditions, including but not limited to:
First, your acupuncturist will ask you about your health history and the symptoms you are experiencing. Then, an examination will be done, which may include looking at your tongue’s shape, color and coating, and taking your pulse. There may be other physical examination methods used, depending on your condition. With the information gained from the exam, a course of treatment will be planned for your specific condition.
To begin the treatment, you may lay comfortably on a table while acupoints are stimulated in various places on your body. Most people feel no or minimal discomfort as slender needles are gently placed into the acupoints. Other acupoint stimulation techniques include pressure, massage, heat therapy, the application of herbal medicines and liniments, and cupping.
The number of treatments you will require will depend on your condition and how you respond to treatment.
